Dirt: The Movie

Sent to us from our friends at the New Haven Bioregional/Transition Group

“Floods, drought, climate change, even war are all directly related to the way we are treating dirt.”

When: Thursday, February 17, 6 PM
Where: Barnard School, 170 Derby Avenue, New Haven
(Corner of Ella Grasso Blvd. and Derby Ave.)

Bring a snack or dessert to share!!

We’ll have a discussion after the movie.

Dirt! The Movie is an insightful and timely film that tells the story of the glorious and unappreciated material beneath our feet. Inspired by William Bryant Logan’s acclaimed book Dirt: The Ecstatic Skin of the Earth, Dirt! The Movie takes a humorous and substantial look into the history and current state of the living organic matter that we come from and will later return to.

– Dirt The Movie will make you want to get dirty!

“The only remedy for disconnecting people from the natural world is connecting them to it again.”

What we’ve destroyed, we can heal.

Another Fresh screening

We had about 25 people come out to CMI for the Fresh screening today. Discussion was productive as we realized that many of us are in the same frame of mind. We just need a clear idea of what we want and how to get it. I’m talking fresh, locally grown/sourced food all year long.

Is this possible? Let’s see…

Everything I Want To Do Is Illegal

Check out this essay, “Everything I Want To Do Is Illegal,” by Joel Salatin about the barriers between small farmers and conscious eaters. He wrote a book of the same title in 2007, which you can purchase here.

Senate Bill S. 510: FDA Food Safety Modernization Act

I’m not sure how accurate this petition person’s assessment is of the proposed bill, but maybe someone with more legal experience can interpret it for us.

The new Food Safety Bill includes a reclassification of farmer’s markets, CSAs and roadside stands as “retail food establishments”. The interpretation is that they will be taxed differently and that it will be “illegal to grow your own food.” I view the former part as a real possibility but latter part as hyperbole. Nevertheless, it’s not the CSAs who are the sources of our salmonella outbreaks. Why do they need additional layers of regulation? Doesn’t that simply play into the hands of bigger establishments with the money have legal counsel in constant battle with federal (or state) regulators?

Here is the website with the actual text of the bill: http://www.govtrack.us/congress/bill.xpd?bill=s111-510
